Abdominoplasty: Abdominoplasty is the plastic surgery for pendulous abdomen. Here liposuction alone will not be beneficial. In abdominoplasty operation excess skin and fat from the lower abdomen is removed, lax abdominal muscles are tightened and the umbilicus is repositioned at a higher point. Finally upper abdominal skin flap is pulled down and stitched just above the groin level. This makes the abdomen tight & flat.
Hernioplasty: For large incisional hernia, where significant volume of intestinal loops protrudes outside the abdominal cavity (through a gap in scar of previous operation) are replaced inside the abdomen, and the gap (called neck of the hernia) in closed. Weak abdominal muscles are then tightened and a prolene net is placed over it to strengthen the repair & prevent future recurrence of the hernia. The operation's last step is similar to abdominoplasty procedure – here exccess redundant skin is removed and repair done in the lower abdomen (lower picture). The final shape is a flat abdomen with no bulges.
